CANVAS is the empty surface on which moods and music are carefully placed to create electronic landscapes with some jazzy roughness and a housy touch. cut-up fragmented electronic beats play against the warmth of double bass, strings and fender rhodes.
CANVAS is the Paris based Franco-German formation Sam Rouanet (fr) and Phil Stumpf (ger) together with the double bass player James Sindatry (fr).
Sam Rouanet came to Paris via Chicago and London where he was working as dj and jazz musician with people from bands like isotope 217° and Kinobee.
Phil Stumpf is part of the German band OH, a 5-piece electro-house project with 2 albums and several singles released on mdz/virgin.
As dj/producer duo Sam Rouanet and Phil Stumpf further produce music as DUPLEX 100 which combines the funk of early 90´s Chicago house with the influences of German minimal house.

CANVAS est un groupe hétéroclite qui tire son talent de sa diversité. Pas d'étiquettes ni de barrière si ce n'est toujours le respect du son et une grande humilité qui se traduit par l'amour du travail bien fait. Entre rigueur de l'électronique et improvisation acoustique, la musique est ici affaire de climat et voire de sentiment. Nappes et touches de Rhodes, beats et basse buissonnière, la musique prend son temps en toute simplicité, sans jamais mettre l'auditeur en danger d'inconfort ou d'interrogations. Les mélodies et l'atmosphère sont le résultat d'une composition qui privilégie le silence plus que la superposition. Vous l'aurez compris les membres de Canvas prennent leur travail au sérieux et s'il faut apposer une étiquette ce serait celle d'une electro-domestique, habillage raffiné pour paysage clos.
CANVAS
Sam Rouanet, guitariste de jazz, bassiste, bidouilleur, ingénieur du son et DJ. A voyagé en vue d'approfondir ses connaissances musicales de Londres à Chicago, l'occasion pour lui de travailler avec Isotope 217° (avec des membres de Tortoise) ou Kinobee (Jive Rec). A Paris, en plus de Canvas, il organise avec Phil Stumpf, les soirées Minimal Dancin et compose ensemble sous le nom de Duplex 100, une techno hybride puisant autant dans la house de chicago que dans le minimalisme allemand. Phil Stumpf, membre de Duplex 100 et Oh (Mdz/Virgin), probablement le seul groupe allemand de house composé de 5 musiciens et responsable de 2 albums et plusieurs maxis. Co-Instigateur et DJ des soirées Minimal Dancin. James Sindatry, Bassiste et contrebassiste participe à Paris à plusieurs projets jazz ou chanson, multi-instrumentiste peut troquer les cordes pour la flûte traversière ou le trombone. Jacques Rouanet : pianiste attitré de Canvas, joueur de Rhodes et père de Sam.
CANVAS, première référence du label a été saluée comme la révélation electronica-jazz de 2003 en France.
